(I work for a large supermarket chain in a very multi-cultural suburb. We sell phone and data credit which comes printed out on a receipt. The customers tell us which company they want credit for and how much credit they would like)

Customer: “Opta!”

Me: “…I’m sorry?”

Customer: “Opta! Opta!”

Me: “I’m afraid I don’t understand what you’re trying to say, sir.”

Customer: “Opta!” *hands me $30*

Me: “Oh! You want a $30 Optus recharge?”

Customer: “Opta!”

(He didn’t complain once I’d handed it to him, so I guess that was what he was after. One of my coworkers was nearby during this exchange and for the rest of the day we kept yelling “Opta!” at each other.)
