Me: *answers phone* “Good morning, [Company]”

Caller: “It’s [Supplier]. Can I speak to accounts payable?”

Me: “One moment, please.”

(I call our accounts girl, but she doesn’t pick up. I figure she’s gone to get coffee or something, so I get the call back.)

Me: “I’m afraid there’s no answer from them. Can I take a message?”

Caller: “Phone number is XXXXX-XXXXXX. We received a payment from you on [date] for [X amount]. I just need to know what the payment is for.”

Me: “No problem; I’ll have [co-worker] look into that and phone you back.”

(He hangs up. I go back to my original task of opening the day’s mail.

I s*** you not, the next letter I open is from [supplier], with “Outstanding payment” splashed across the top of the letter head. After confirming it was for X-amount, I promptly bang my head on the desk.)
