Retail Workers Never Get Away Scotch-Free

| Working | March 7, 2013

(One of my coworkers is having a staff party at her house. Although everyone was invited, one of our managers informed us that he wouldn’t be attending, since it’s a BYOB event and he doesn’t drink.)

Coworker: “Oh, looks like someone’s at the door!”

(She goes over to answer. Much to everyone’s surprise, it’s our manager—the very same manager who didn’t plan on showing up.)

Manager: “Hey there, everyone!”

Coworker: “Can I get you anything? I’ve got plenty of food and non-alcoholic beverages, if you’d like.”

Manager: “Thanks, but I’m good.”

(So far, the party is going over well. Our manager doesn’t ask for anything, but then he starts eyeing the bottle of Scotch that I brought over.)

Manager: “Whose Scotch is this?”

Me: “That would be mine.”

Manager: “If it’s not too much trouble, can I have a glass?”

Me: “Certainly! Wait, I thought you don’t drink?”

Manager: “Look, I’m in my late sixties and I work in retail. Right about now, I’d say alcohol is the least of my concerns. Now hit me, barkeep!”

(I poured him a stiff one without prying any further!)
