You’re Being Disrespectful To Shark Music

(In the mid 90s I am listening to some music while on the bus, waiting for our speech team to head out to the next contest.)
Team Member: “What are you listening to?”
Me: “The Jaws soundtrack.”
Team Member: “Oh, I thought you were listening to that ethnic stuff again.”
Me: “All music is ethnic music. This just happens to be from the same ethnicity as us.”
Team Member: “You know what I mean!” *huffs and turns away*
(At the time, I had a small collection of African, Navajo, and Japanese folk music CDs. So I’m sure she thought I was listening to that.)
