Bigots Use Inbred Logic

| Working | August 6, 2013

(I am training a new coworker on registering patients.)

Coworker: “Oh, I see you have the same as nurse [name]; are you related to her?”

Patient: “No, I’m not.”

Coworker: “But you have the same last name; you must be related.”

(At this point, I butt in.)

Me: “People can have the same last name; sorry about that, miss. [Coworker], please just continue the registration.”

Coworker: “People here have the same last name, but she’s Muslim. All Muslims have the same name because of inbreeding. Everyone knows that.”

(Both the patient and I look at my coworker in shock.)

Me: “Okay, you’re done here; go to the back NOW. Miss, I’ll be finishing this registration.”

(After finishing and apologizing to her, I go to the back room to talk to my coworker.)

Me: “You can’t say that to patients; that is rude!”

Coworker: “Well, it’s true.”

Me: “I’m Muslim as well, and I don’t share her last name. Everyone can have a different or same last name. Doesn’t mean we are inbreeds.”

Coworker: “You probably changed your name.”

(My coworker then walks out of the room like nothing she said was wrong. She was fired shortly after.)
