A Weightier Subject For Some Students

| Learning | April 26, 2016

Teacher: “I don’t want to hear anyone in this classroom talk about being afraid of snakes! They will not hurt you unless you attack them. For any snake to consider you prey, you would have to be 5 feet tall and a hundred pounds.”

(I shift awkwardly at this, as I am both very tiny and petrified of snakes. My teacher notices and studies me for a moment.)

Teacher: “If you don’t mind me asking, how tall are you?”

Me: “I’m five-two.”

Teacher: “And how much do you—”

Me: “95 pounds.”

(My teacher looks at me and pauses for a good thirty seconds.)

Teacher: “Okay, SHE is allowed to be afraid of snakes! Nobody else!”
