More Creative Freedom

(I go to a friend’s house for a party. Both this friend and I are teachers at a local school. I end up talking with one of her friends who is not.)

Party-Goer: “So I heard you’re an English teacher?”

Me: “Creative writing, actually.”

Party-Goer: “Isn’t that the same thing?”

Me: “No, the English teachers get to talk to the kids and say ‘this is how to use English correctly.’ I get to undo all that by saying all the rules they just learned are really more suggestions…”
