Needs Some Atolerance
(I’m sitting with a friend and a girl from my science class. My friend has finished talking about the romantic date that her boyfriend took her on for her birthday.)
Girl: “That’s so sweet! How about you, [My Name]? Do you have a boyfriend?”
Me: “No, I’m an asexual.”
Girl: “A what?”
Me: “An asexual. It means that I don’t get sexually attracted to men or women. I might have a non-sexual relationship at some point, but it’s hard finding partners who aren’t looking for something ‘more.'”
Girl: “Oh, sweetie.” *lowers voice* “Are you really a lesbian? Because people are really tolerant.”
Me: “No, I’m an asexual.”
Girl: “There’s no such thing. It’s all right to be a lesbian, you know. Even if your parents don’t support you, there’s still a lot of people who would.”
Me: “My parents would support me IF I was a lesbian. But I’m not. I’m asexual.”
Girl: “It’s all right, honey. When you’re ready to come out of the closet, find me. I have lots of lesbian friends.”
(The girl from my science class leaves. My friend and I exchange looks.)
Friend: “You get that a lot, don’t you?”
Me: “Yup. It’s right up there with ‘you just haven’t found the right person yet.'”
